The Region gets Chicago's weather half an hour later and Lake Michigan's own on top of it. The lake-effect snow machine points straight at these counties when the wind comes out of the northwest — LaPorte County measures its winters in feet — and the same lake holds the summer heat off the shore while Valparaiso bakes.

Michiana is the snowiest corner of Indiana and the reason is 60 miles of open Lake Michigan to the northwest. When the wind comes off it, the bands set up over St. Joseph and Elkhart counties and stay there — South Bend measures its winters against Buffalo, not Indianapolis. The Toll Road closes for it most years.

Fort Wayne sits on the divide where three rivers meet, which is why the flooding here is a downtown problem rather than a rural one. North of the city the lakes country catches lake-effect snow off Michigan on a northwest wind, and the whole corner is far enough from any moderating water that January runs as cold as anywhere in the state.

This is the prairie edge of Indiana, and the storms arrive with nothing to slow them. The dryline never reaches here but the squall lines that form on it do, generally after dark, and the open corn ground gives the wind a clean run — the derechos that cross Illinois hold together across these counties more often than not.

Flat, open farm ground with nothing upwind, which is the classic Indiana severe-weather setup: the spring squall lines cross these counties with the whole width of Illinois behind them. Winter is the freezing-rain line, which sets up along I-69 and I-70 more reliably here than anywhere else in the state.

The Wabash Valley sits over one of the few seismic zones east of the Rockies, but the weather is the nearer problem: this stretch of the Illinois line is the eastern end of the corridor that produced the Tri-State Tornado, and the valley funnels the spring storms up it. The river itself floods the bottoms most springs.

Southern Indiana is the warm end of a cold state and the hilly end of a flat one. The Ohio River valley pulls Gulf moisture up it, which makes this the wettest corner of Indiana and the one most likely to see a winter storm arrive as rain, ice and snow in the same twelve hours. The November 2005 Evansville tornado came through at two in the morning.
